Honors Option
Honors weighting of grades is available for qualified musicians. This involves more intensive course work and allows those students with a high interest and ability level in music to participate in an extension and enrichment of the music program. The honors level encourage independence, leadership, and creativity in each student involved.
ADMISSION
Students require the recommendation of their current director and approval by the high school director.
GRADING PROCEDURES
All honors students must complete the regular course requirements for the school year, as well as the additional requirements of the honors program. For details of the regular course requirements, please see the Band Handbook. Students will receive detailed rubrics and descriptions for assignment/project as it approaches.
1st Quarter - IMEA District VII Auditions: Students will prepare for the ILMEA District 7 Auditions.
Music will be available prior to the end of this school year, so student can (and should) prepare this over the summer. Students will complete two formative hearings and then either a summative hearing or go on to district auditions in October. If students do well at the auditions, they can be selected to go onto a district festival with the best musicians in our area or even to state. This is the most difficult project of the four. Students should not be discouraged by the music. We want them to attempt these auditions repeatedly throughout their high school career. Most students that go onto to district are juniors and seniors. Younger or inexperienced students benefit greatly by just going through the experience of the audition process.
2nd, 3rd, & 4th Quarter - Exploratory Project: Students will choose a topic that you find interesting that is not covered in the class. This project can end up in any form: paper, website, presentation, recital, recordings, film, etc. Students will submit a proposal for their project and will outline their process for completing the assignment.
