Frequently asked questions
WHEN AND WHERE DOES FIFTH GRADE BAND MEET?
Fifth grade band meets every Tuesday and Wednesday during the school year from 4-4:40pm in the Round Lake Middle School band room.
DO I NEED A RIDE TO AND FROM REHEARSALS?
Nope! Buses will take you from your elementary school once the school day is over to Round Lake Middle School for band and then bring you home after band is dismissed for the day. Please note that it is not door-to-door service but transportation uses the closest intersection bus stop to your home. Parents are welcome to pick up their children after rehearsal at door 18 in the back of RLMS.
Who Teaches Fifth Grade Band?
What Instruments Do I Get to try When You Come to my School?
We start all of our fifth grade students on either flute, clarinet, trumpet, or trombone. During fourth quarter we offer the opportunity for students to switch to other instruments like saxophone, percussion, euphonium, oboe, etc.
Why Can't I Play Saxophone or Percussion Yet?
The reason we only offer flute, clarinet, trumpet, or trombone for the first three quarters of the school year is so that we can give all of our students a solid musical base from the very beginning. Each of the four band directors will instruct one of the instruments in a sectional format which put everyone on an even playing field together. We begin alternating between sectionals and full band rehearsals during second quarter and offer switches to instruments like saxophone, percussion, euphonium, etc. at the beginning of fourth quarter.
Are Concerts Mandatory?
Yes! You are required to be at every concert as we practice as a team and perform as a team. There are three concerts a year which will be scheduled shortly and posted on this website.
What Do We Wear to Concerts?
For the 2018-2019 school year the concert uniform is all black, also known as "concert black". This means that you need to purchase a nice outfit consisting of a solid black top, solid black bottoms (pants or a skirt that is below the finger tips with arms straight at the sides), solid black shoes, and if necessary, solid black socks or leggings. There should not be any logos or designs on your concert clothes. This will be the same concert uniform when you go to middle school band.
Can I Use an Instrument that I Already Have at Home?
If you have a flute, clarinet, trumpet, or trombone at home or one from a family member or friend, you are welcome to use it for band. Please use the contact form below to send us a message so we can arrange a time with you to check out to let you know if it is a quality instrument and in playing condition, or if it needs any repairs.
Can I Purchase an instrument on amazon of at big box stores like walmart?
NO! DON'T DO IT! Instruments should be purchased/rented from reputable music dealers like our partner Music & Arts or a certified music store with an expert assisting you. If you purchase a no-name brand of instrument you will be very disappointed as they break easily and cannot be repaired by music stores. The reason they cannot be repaired is that stores do not carry parts for these and they cannot be ordered. Purchasing from a site like Amazon is also dangerous as you may be purchasing based on what it looks like in a picture instead of what it is physically made of and the play-ability of the specific instrument. DO NOT PURCHASE AN INSTRUMENT THAT IS RED/BLUE/GREEN/YELLOW/PINK/etc. These are inferior quality. If you are looking to purchase your own instrument, we did the research for you! Please read our instrument buying guide - ENGLISH | SPANISH
Do I need anything else besides an instrument?
Yes, you will need the Essential Elements Book 1 for your specific instrument. This will be offered to you if you are renting from Music & Arts or you can get it online. A quick Google search should get you the right results but make sure it is the YELLOW book and that you choose the correct instrument!
What if i missed the rental night and a few rehearsals but still want to rent an instrument and join the band?
If i rent from music & arts, when and where will i get my instrument?
All instruments and supplies will be delivered to Round Lake Middle School unless you tell the company to ship to your home. Contact Mrs. Pulver-Settler if you would like to pick up any shipped items before the next time your student is at rehearsal.
Is there an event calendar for the year?
how can I make sure I get messages from directors?
