Why is taking a music class important?
The skills gained through sequential music instruction (including the ability to analyze, solve problems, communicate, and work cooperatively) are vital for success in the 21st century workplace. Although there is some controversy on exactly how much music affects children's learning abilities, it is known that music is linked to improved math, memory and reading skills.
How can my student clean their instrument?
Specific cleaning instructions will be distributed to students at the beginning of the school year, but there are also numerous sources of information online. It is important that these instructions are followed and only the recommended items are used to clean an instrument. DO NOT use household tools to repair an instrument. Not following the proper steps or using the wrong tools can lead to a costly trip to the instrument repair shop.
How can I rent/purchase an instrument or instrument supplies for my student?
We have a whole document of information on buying your own instrument (also available in Spanish).
Music & Arts handles all of our rentals and repairs, and has a wide variety of supplies to pick from.
Information on supplies can be found at these links: Brass & Woodwind, Percussion
How can I contact the director?
The best way to reach your director is through email or Remind, although messaging through the various online tools we use work as well. Contacting via phone is ineffective as the director is not always near the school phone. Contacting through these electronic means allows the message to go to one or more devices the director uses on a regular basis, ensuring the message will be received in a timely manner. If there is a need for a phone or in-person conference then an appointment can be made to do so.
- Musical Learning
- Students enrolled in band at JTMMS will be introduced to an in-depth curriculum on proper playing technique, notation, musical vocabulary, and rhythm while preparing literature of varied musical styles for performance. Students will also have the opportunity to learn about the historical and social importance of some of the music they perform.
- Life Skills
- Even for a child who's not interested in professional musical aspirations, band and choir both offer huge benefits. Being a part of an ensemble teaches discipline and responsibility. Regular practice promotes diligence, conscientiousness, and prioritization. Through the practice and performance cycle, young musicians learn that hard work has rewards and that sometimes your best isn't good enough — but you can still enjoy the journey.
