Basketball Band performs at the home basketball games. We do our best to bring the energy to the game and help the team to a victory. We play many popular tunes including hits by Michael Jackson, Queen, One Direction, Maroon 5, Taylor Swift, Blues Brothers, and many more! All students enrolled in a curricular ensemble are required to participate in basketball band.
Students are given the grading procedures and schedule of basketball games in November. Students are not required to attend all basketball games. Students choose a number of games to meet a certain requirement each year. Additional games attended count for extra credit. Games typically start around mid November and last until mid February. Basketball Ball Band grades count as a third quarter grade.
Once schedule request sheets have been turned in and compiled, students should check the rosters on the Basketball Band attendance page to make sure they are meeting the required game number. If not, they should request an alternative assignment to earn that credit. If you did not turn in a schedule request form, Mr. West assigned you to games based on needed instrumentation. If you are one of the individuals that did not turn in a form, it would be wise to check which games you have been assigned to and figure out conflicts immediately and find subs for yourself.

Basketball Band - Frequently Asked Questions
When does basketball band rehearse?
Basketball Band is actually part of the curricular ensembles, so all rehearsals happen during class. Before each game, we do warm-up and run a few tunes before going into the gym and performing. The music repertoire for basketball band is much more vast than a typical concert cycle. Students are expected to practice all of the music outside of class.
Do I have to audition?
Nope! Just be part of Beginning Band, Concert Band, Symphonic Band, or Percussion Ensemble.
Why are students required to participate in basketball band?
One purpose of Round Lake Bands provide our students with a well-round musical education, which includes music pulled from a wide variety of genres. Basketball Band allows us to examine many different types of music in a short amount of time. Marching band may not be everyone's cup of tea, but a strong band program exposes students to the three main types of ensembles: concert, jazz, athletic. Another purpose of the program is to support the school and community. Having a basketball band drastically alters the atmosphere of a basketball game and pep rally. It improves student morale, increases energy, and actually helps create a home court advantage for the teams.
What kind of music does the basketball band play?
A lot of different genres! We try and play a lot of different pieces in basketball band. Many of the pieces we chose are higher in energy to get the crowd going. Our selection have pieces as recent as the couple of year's top hits to classics like Johnny B. Goode and Louie, Louie. We try and choose music that will engage the audience and our ensemble members. While every student might not like every piece, we really try to make sure there is at least one piece that a student enjoys.
How often does the basketball band perform?
We try and perform at as many varsity men and women's games as possible. We are averaging about 13-15 games per year. Not every student is performing at every game. Prior to the season we choose/assign games for students. Some games we do skip due to other performance conflicts.
HOw Many Games do I have to perform at/how do i choose the games i perform at?
Students are given a list in November that includes all of the games we plan on performing at. From there, students choose an additional 5-7 games (depends on how many games total there are for the season) that work with their schedule. Students have about a week or two to turn in their schedule requests, so they have time to compare it to their personal calendar and bring it home to their parents to look at.

What day & Times are the Games?
We have tentative schedules in the spring, but nothing is set in stone until the fall. By November, we have definitive schedules. Typically, games fall on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Occasionally, they may fall on a Saturday. If they are during the week, call time will be 6:00 PM, performing in the gym starting at 6:30 PM, tipoff at 7 PM, and an approximate end time of 8:15 PM. If they are on the weekend, call time will be 11:00 AM, performing in the gym starting at 11:30 AM, tipoff at 12 PM, and an approximate end time of 1:15 PM. Special event games (8th grade night and alumni night will have altered schedules).
How Can I check what games I signed up for? How do I check my attendance for the season so far?
All rosters are entered into a spreadsheet. This spreadsheet is found on Google Classroom, which students have 24/7 access to. We update the attendance after each game. It is up to each student to keep track of their attendance and if they are on track to meeting the requirement.
What happens if I cannot make a game that I originally signed up for?
Once the rosters are compiled, you are committed to that game. If an emergency comes up or for some other reason and you need to change which game you can attend, it is YOUR responsibility to find someone to sub for you. We will know that they are subbing for you because when attendance is taken your sub will see the student assistant or drum major and the sub’s name will be written down next to yours. If your sub does not show up in your place, you will still be marked down for your absence.
We use this policy because it is what students will encounter in a collegiate setting. This is also similar to a situation a student would encounter if they have a part time job and need a shift covered.
